Rossano, Josephine

Josephine Rossano, 94, passed away February 17, 2018, at the Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center after several years’ struggle with the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.  She was born April 13, 1923, daughter of the late Ignazio and Rose (Natalizio) Centineo, in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY.  Her elementary schooling was in the neighborhood, but, as a high school student, she was accepted into the renowned Textile High School program in Manhattan where she studied interior design.  It was here that her life-long involvement with the decorative arts began.
In 1943, in the midst of World War II, she married Vincent Rossano (known to all as “Ross”) and, soon thereafter, moved to Austin, Texas, to be near her husband’s station until the war ended.
In the early 1950’s, after her son and daughter were born, Josephine and Ross moved the family from Brooklyn to Bergen County, New Jersey, where she raised her children and operated a successful antique business.
In 1984, having been widowed several years earlier, she joined her daughter’s young family in Sherman, CT., where she spent the next thirty years.  These were some of the happiest years of her life as she watched her grandchildren grow and met many new friends through her work at Voltaire’s Shop and Gallery and later as Young Adult Specialist at the New Milford Public Library.  During these years she was also able to satisfy her yearning for travel to exotic places, most notably spending her 80th birthday with her good friend Judy Burroughs on China’s Yangtze River.
Josephine is survived by her daughter, Lorraine Dreier and her husband Matt of Danbury, her son, Vincent, Jr. of Burlington, VT, four grandchildren: Matthew Dreier and his wife Liz of Simsbury, Nicole Hoyle and her husband Dave of Middletown, Elizabeth Rossano and her husband Griffin Lussier of Hardwick, VT, and Vincent D. Rossano of Plainfield, VT, and by one great-grandchild: Julia Elizabeth Dreier.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, CT. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (https://www.alz.org)
