John V. Dowling, 85, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Monday, September 25, 2017.
Born on April 26, 1932 in Queens, New York to Marion (Demerest) and Edward D. Dowling, Jack Dowling was the youngest of four children, sister Janet Hanson, and brothers Robert and Edward Jr… He graduated Class of 1950, Chaminade High, Mineola, NY, then attended Providence College, class of 1954, with a degree in Engineering. Jack served in the US Army, 1st Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers where he designed and constructed combat-ready collapsible bridges and as suited his varied and exceptional talents, he was selected for the Army’s ski patrol. He moved to Missouri, then Michigan to work within the automotive industry with his wife Patricia Murtagh who he married in 1957. In 1965 he moved with his family to Bridgewater CT where he lived for over thirty years. There he helped raise five children on a hobby farm along with a menagerie of animals including horses, chickens, ducks and others. He became active in local civic affairs, including the local Catholic Church of St. Francis, and was a highly motivated member of the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department. In New Milford, CT he found and headed up Arrowhead International. As lead engineer and salesman, he most skillfully developed a client base and partnerships throughout the Far East, Northern Europe, Africa, and beyond. The most notable of these partnerships was his relationship with lifelong friend Hidetoshi Shigeki and family. They were and remain family to this day. The inventor, the athlete, the gentleman farmer, the craftsmen, the horseman, the music maker, the traveler, the businessman, the sailor, the husband, the father, the uncle, Jack, even with all of his flaws, left us with the legacy and enduring belief that anything is possible. Jack is also survived by: his 3 daughters Patty Dowling-Finnegan, Kate Dowling Emenau and Crissy Dowling; his grandchildren, Conor Finnegan, Drew, Madeline, and Ted Kapp, Kaï and Henri Emenau; his son-in-laws Andrew Kapp and Michael Emenau, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Jack was pre-deceased by his sons Dennis Dowling, John Dowling and his daughter Mary Francis Kapp.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday September 30, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Our Lady of The Lakes Church 3 Old Park Road, New Milford, CT
