Rozanne “Zonni” Hume Edmondson, of New Milford, Connecticut and NYC, died peacefully on July 28 at age 87. Born to May Desjardins and Nelson Hume in Danbury, Ct., Zonni grew up on the campus of Canterbury School, where her father was founder and first headmaster, tagging after her three older brothers Michael, Stephen and David, who bestowed on their little sister the nickname Zonni, which stuck. She attended a succession of Sacred Heart schools – Eden Hall, Maplehurst, Noroton, and ultimately Manhattanville College, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English. This immersion in the Sacred Heart culture and spirit forged in her a deep lifelong affinity for Catholic education. A highlight of her college years was spending her junior year abroad at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, She held onto her love of Scotland and all things Scottish for her entire life, visiting often and ultimately buying a home there. Athletic and energetic, Zonni excelled in all sports throughout school, and particularly in golf during her adult years. She was the ladies golf champion at the Lake Waramaug Country Club, where she had been a member since her teenage years. She also proudly became one of the first American members of the Guillane Ladies Golf Club in East Lothian, Scotland, where she won the Silver Medal. Upon college graduation, Zonni worked for General Electric before marrying her husband of 54 years, J. Richard Edmondson, and focusing on raising their five children. As her children grew older, she deepened her connection with Sacred Heart education, working at Convent of the Sacred Heart, 91st Street, NYC, initially in the alumnae office and later as Director of Admissions for ten years. She was at the heart and center of a large extended family who loved her deeply, including her three brothers (who predeceased her) and their spouses and children, her husband Dick (who died in 2009), her children Lisa Kiernan (John), Katie Gilmore (Steve), Timothy Edmondson (Danielle) , Nick Edmondson and Julia Luce (Dave), her nine grandchildren (John, Sam, Reilly, Paul and Callie Kiernan; Stephanie Gilmore Elliott, Mallory Gilmore Reed, Hailey Gilmore and Isabelle Edmondson; and her great-grandson Emmet Reed. A funeral mass and celebration of Zonni’s life will be held at the Chapel of Our Lady, Canterbury School, 101 Aspetuck Ave. New Milford, Ct. on Friday August 4 at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Convent of the Sacred Heart, 91st St., NYC. 10128.
