Alma (Jean) Weeks Allen, 86, died peacefully, on Friday June 30, 2017 at Candlewood Valley Health Care Center, in New Milford, CT.
She was born November 4, 1930, in Clarksburg, WV, the daughter of the late Harry and Neva Weeks.
Intelligent, funny, curious and energetic, Jean handled the many transitions and challenges that came her way in life with determination, humor and grit. When things got tough, she would say, “I just find something to look forward to.”
Jean worked at the New Milford Times and later at the Litchfield County Times for twenty years. Both jobs she loved and found exciting. She volunteered as a Sunday school teacher for the Roxbury Congregational Church for six years, and was active in the Ladies’ Aid and church choir. She was also a Girl Scout leader for eight years. Jean volunteered to work on projects for the youth group, Pilgrim Fellowship, in Roxbury, and volunteered for the Republican Town Committee. She gave her time to many other town committees and functions. Jean loved Roxbury and the people of Roxbury. She loved her home, the deer she fed in the winter, the woods, and the peepers making noise at night, gardening, quilting, and genealogy. She loved the birds that came and went, fed them and watched them from season to season. She especially held her family and friends in the highest regard. She loved spending time with her family, watching first her children grow, and then her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was interested in all of us and was happiest when spending time with one or many of us.
Jean is survived by her son, Kenneth Allen (Nancy, pre-deceased) of Roxbury, daughter Harriet Allen (Suzanne) of Lewes, DE, daughter Kathryn Allen (Laurie) of West Hartford, and daughter Jane McDermott (James) of New Milford. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren, Trevor Allen of Greenville, SC; Reid Allen of Cambridge, MA; Nora Allen of Charlottesville, VA; Wayne Clinton of New Milford; Brenda Tomaino of Danbury; Cheryl Pitcher of Sherman; Elizabeth Voelpel of Southbury; Stephen Clinton of Bantam; Caroline Cates of Lewes, DE; and Libnerys Nunez of West Hartford; as well as nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a nephew, John, and two nieces, Barbara and Karla. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth (Ray) Allen, in 2002, a sister, Mary and two brothers, Charles and Harry.
Our family would like to thank the many individuals at the Candlewood Nursing Home for the love, care and companionship they offered our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. We hope they understand the important role they played in our mother’s day-to- day life. She loved the garden outside her window, feeding the birds and squirrels, and talking to all the caring people that surrounded her every day. You made a huge difference in her quality of life.
Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at 11 am at Roxbury Congregational Church, Roxbury, CT. Interment will be in the Roxbury Center Cemetery.
Friends may call on Monday, July 3, 2017 from 5 to 7 pm at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, CT.
