Lopez, Avelino “Peter”

Avelino P. Lopez “Peter” of New Milford, CT, passed away Wednesday March 1, 2017 in New Milford at the age of 86.
Peter was born September 9, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Fernando and Catherine (Dewolfe) Lopez.  Peter was a 35-year career IBM Corporation employee, starting out in a Branch Office selling and servicing typewriters in New York City. He ultimately became a member of IBM’s Corporate benefits staff in Armonk, New York.  Peter became known as IBM’s expert on administering employee medical benefits through Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO’s).  He was a major contributor in establishing IBM’s national leadership reputation in the employee benefits field.  He enjoyed his work and was proud to be an IBMer.  Not one to sit still after retiring from IBM in 1992, Peter moved on to a second career in Broker Relations for MVP Health Plans, Schenectady NY.
Peter was a man of curious mind and varied passions.  He was widely traveled, an avid reader, enjoyed shopping and fine dining and had a life-long love of salt water fishing, photography and music.    Peter was a true people person and enjoyed visitng with family and friends.  He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Joan (Boehm) and their two daughters; Julie Sakowski (Mark) of Chapel Hill, NC and Susan Rosen (Thomas) of North Caldwell, NJ; son in law Tom Eddington of Mill Valley, CA; and 4 grandchildren: Hollyn and Grant Rosen and Andrew and Laney Eddington. He was predeceased by his 2 sisters and daughter Regina Eddington.
A memorial and interment service will be held on April 22, 2017, 11:00am at Upper Merryall Cemetery in New Milford, CT.  Arrangements by the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, CT.
