Born on August 13, 1946, he was a lifelong resident of New Milford and spent his early years on the Russell family dairy farm located on Danbury Road-haying, milking cows, driving tractors, and showing his calves at the Bridgewater Fair. After college, he served in the US Army for two years at Fort Bliss -Texas in radio communications. Roger used his keen love of science, working for 20 years in the Hematology Lab at Danbury Hospital. In 1992 he began a second career as an investment advisor for IDS/Ameriprise Investments. He enjoyed watching the markets and serving his clients until his retirement in 2011.
Retirement years provided Roger with more time for walking at Harrybrooke Park, playing setback with family, leisurely reading newspapers and the occasional trip to the Foxwoods casino to play a little Texas Hold ’em. Roger was a 35 year member of the Odd Fellow & Rebekah Lodge. Over the years he worked scholarship pancake breakfasts, roast beef dinners, bowled in their league, and served as Treasurer.
Roger is survived by his siblings Jane (Alan) Young of Eagan, MN, Timothy (Christine) Russell of Lexington, KY, Donald (Mary-Anne) Russell of New Milford, and Marianne (Kevin) Lawlor of Cheshire, CT. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews, 7 first cousins and 5 godchildren.
The family wishes to thank the dedicated doctors, nurses and caregivers at the New Milford Hospital, Diebold Cancer Center, and the Village Crest Rehabilitation Center for their professional and loving care during his recent illness. They are also thankful for the support shown by the members of the Odd Fellow & Rebekah Lodge.
