Brodrick, Elizabeth R.

Elizabeth “Bette” Rohr Broderick, 96, passed to her creator at Bethel Health Care on December 8, 2016. . Bette was born to Charles and Maude Rohr in Dodgeville, Wisconsin on August 10, 1920 and was the youngest of 8 children, all of whom predeceased her. She graduated from Dodgeville High School and attended Madison Business College. She entered the service of her country by joining the Women’s Army Corps during World War II where she met her husband John. She married John Broderick at St. Mary’s Church in Yonkers, New York on December 31, 1943. Bette served in Fort Dix until her discharge from the army. At the end of the war, both John and Bette went to work for Otis Elevator Company and lived in Yonkers, New York until their retirement in 1978, when they moved to their former summer home in Candlewood Lake Estates, Sherman, CT. This became their permanent residence from which John passed in 1995. Bette remained in Sherman until 2003 when failing health forced her to move to Chestnut Grove in New Milford where she lived for 3 years before moving to The Cascades in Bethel and then to Bethel Health Care. Bette was loved for her adventurous spirit which was exemplified by a glider ride at age 85, several Piper rides in a friend’s airplane at age 85 and up, and her exploits at The Cascades which were newsworthy enough to get coverage in the News Times. She tobogganed down a slope near her apartment and was instrumental in 25 residents as well as herself going up in a hot air balloon. Bette told the newspaper at the time or her hot air balloon ride that, “It’s up to you what you want to do with your life. I’m enjoying myself.” Although she had little family, Bette will be sorely missed by all her friends, especially Mike and Vi Shyman who have assisted Bette in her last 13 years and who would like to thank all the staff that took care of her for the last 10 years at the Bethel Care facilities, especially Sharon, Lucy and Sandra. Friends may visit at Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, CT, on Monday, December 12, 2016 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Church in Sherman on Tuesday, November 13, 2016 at 10AM. Following services at Holy Trinity, interment will take place at Center Cemetery in New Milford, where her spirit will be reunited with her beloved John.
