Peterson, Joan D.

Joan D. (Devine) Peterson, wife of John E. Peterson, died Monday, September 19, 2016, surrounded by loved ones at home following a progressive illness.

She was born August 8, 1933, in Towners, NY, daughter of Roy Allen Devine and Alice Russell Devine. She graduated from Washington High School in 1951.

Joan cared for residents as a nursing assistant at the tranquil House Convalescent Home in Warren, CT before starting a family. Later, she returned to work as a cashier at Washington Food Market for over 20 years where she enjoyed the friendships gained over nearly 80 years of living in Washington, CT. She also supported organizations both local and globally whose values mirrored hers. She was a longtime member of Roxbury Congregational Church.

Joan enjoyed her family, reading, gardening and was grateful to eventually see her beloved Boston Sox win the World Series.

She is survived by her husband, John E. Peterson and sons Todd and Scott Peterson, all of Washington Depot, CT and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers Woodrow, Clifford and Robert and sisters Amy and Margaret.

Her family wishes to thank Cheryl Podyma and her family for their extraordinary efforts. They also wish to thank Lori Lucas, Kelly Kaylor and Amber Andrews for their home care, Masonicare Hospice for their compassionate care, Danbury Hospital for their dedication and professionalism and Pastor Linda Williams of Salem Covenant Church in Washington Depot, CT for her pastoral care.

A memorial service will be held at Salem Covenant Church in Washington Depot on Saturday October 1, 2016 at 2:30pm. Internment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Washington (CT) Ambulance Corps., 109 Bee Brook Road, P.O. Box 294, Washington Depot, CT 06794.
