David E. Showalter, Sr., age 81, of Washington, CT, passed away peacefully on Sunday July 24, 2016 at Candlewood Valley Care Center in New Milford, CT.
He was born in Bethel in 1935 to Grace & Charles Showalter. He spent his young life there attending Bethel schools. A hard worker from a young age, he always had after-school jobs. As a young man he was known to many by his nickname “Skip”.
At age 21 he married Janet A. Wright of New Preston. He went to work for Wyant & Company, Inc., a major construction company in town. Soon after, he and Janet bought land in Washington and built the house, which was to be their lifelong home.
Over the years he became a master carpenter, and was skilled in all aspects related to building and maintaining house and home. He worked on many of the houses in Washington. Often when driving with his family they would pass by someone’s home and he would proudly say “I worked on that house”.
In 1978 he became Head of Buildings and Grounds at the Gunnery School in Washington and worked there until his retirement in 2000. During those years the school underwent many capital projects and improvements to the buildings and grounds, including the construction of a new ice rink, football field, baseball field and several new buildings on campus.
He was an active member in the Washington Volunteer Fire Department for 58 years. As a member of the Firehouse Building Committee, he helped oversee the construction of the new firehouse on Bee Brook Road. He was honored as a Lifetime Member in 2010.
For many years Dave was the caretaker of the property of George and Ruth Murphy on East Street in Washington. Always known as a hard worker, he gave his all in all that he did, and took great pride in the fruits of his labor.
